![]() ![]() Those who bear witness to him so Christ did. Those whom he sends and employs where he gives commissions he give credentials. See who they are to whom God will bear witness. Observe, (1.) The seal which the Father put to his commission: He beareth witness of me, not only has done so by a voice from heaven, but still does so by the tokens of his presence with me. I take this to be meant of God the Father, for Christ mentions his testimony with his own ( ): I bear witness of myself, and the Father beareth witness of me. The Father himself bore testimony to him ( ): There is another that beareth witness. He produces other witnesses that bear testimony to him that he was sent of God. It reflects honour on the Son of God, and bespeaks his wonderful condescension, that, though he is the faithful witness, the truth itself, who may challenge to be credited upon his honour, and his own single testimony, yet he is pleased to waive his privilege, and, for the confirmation of our faith, refers himself to his vouchers, that we may have full satisfaction. Surely we may say deliberately, what David said in haste, All men are liars, else it would never have been such a received maxim that a man's testimony of himself is suspicious, and not to be relied on it is a sign that self-love is stronger than the love of truth. This reflects reproach upon the sons of men, and their veracity and integrity. He sets aside his own testimony of himself ( ): " If I bear witness of myself, though it is infallibly true ( ), yet, according to the common rule of judgment among men, you will not admit it as legal proof, nor allow it to be given in evidence. 47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words? In these verses our Lord Jesus proves and confirms the commission he had produced, and makes it out that he was sent of God to be the Messiah. 46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. 44 How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. 43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. 42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. 40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. 39 Search the scriptures for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. 38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. ![]() Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. ![]() 37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. 36 But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. 35 He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. 34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved. 33 Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth. 32 There is another that beareth witness of me and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. 31 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.
